October is Staff Appreciation Month at UCP! And we have a full month’s worth of exciting events.

Our employees will be winning tons of awesome prizes in our trivia competition. They’ll be eating pizza at our pizza party. They’ll be nominating their amazing co-workers for the 2015 Annual Staff Awards.

And this week, we're delivering gift baskets to all of the wonderful employees who work directly out of our customers' homes.

A New Team Leader for Community Inclusion

UCP is pleased to announce that we have hired Kaela Gail to be the new Team Leader for our Community Inclusion services, which are known as “Choices”.

Kaela is currently an Assistant Team Leader in our Supported Living program, and already knows many of the people supported by Choices.

Kaela says she is excited to be a part of the Choices team and can’t wait to get started!.

Want to Help People Have the Job of Their Dreams?

UCP is currently seeking a full-time Job Coach. This is a great job for students, because the schedule is Thursday-Monday 11am-7pm.

You'll work one-on-one with adults who experience various developmental disabilities. Most of them are already working in fantastic, community-based jobs.   

You’ll help them learn do tasks more independently, interact with co-workers, and maybe even negotiate for a promotion someday.

The 2014 Walk, Roll 'n' Run Was a Huge Sucess!

Wow!  Another great Walk, Roll ‘n’ Run has passed, and once again, we were delighted with the turnout.

We wish to extend a special "thank you" to all the employees and other volunteers who served on the planning committee, volunteered to help at the event, and who formed team, joined teams, and did fundraising. Thanks to your hard work, at least $98,000 has been raised so far.

Donations are still being accepted through the end of the September; so please click here if you want to help us reach our final goal of raising $100,000.  We are so close!

UCP Makes the 100 Best List Again!

We are excited to announce that UCP has once again been named as one of the 100 Best Nonprofits to Work for in Oregon for 2014!

We achieved this designation based on our employees’ responses to an annual survey adminstered by Oregon Business magazine, as well as our benefits package. We have achieved this designation 5 times now: in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 & 2014.

We will learn where exactly we placed during an awards ceremony on October 1st.

Thanks to all the wonderful employees who made this designation possible! You are truly what makes UCP great.

Meet the UCP Scarecrow

UCP's community garden plot (located in Hazelwood Community Gardens) is in full swing. Lots of people we support (and employees!) love to visit, taking a little time to pull a few weeds, plant, or water.

This year, they will be in the company of UCP's new scarecrow. The scarecrow was created by some of our very creative Choices Support Specialists.

A New Community Services Director

Please join us in welcoming John Goff, UCP’s new Community Services Director. As Community Services Director, John will oversee UCP's supported living and community inclusion ("Choices") services.

John came to us from the east coast, where he served as the Executive Director of a large non-profit that supports adults with disabilities through residential, recreational, and individualized supported employment services. Prior to his work on the east coast, John spent 10 years in Oregon, where he served adults and youth with disabilities in different capacities.

John first became interested in disability issues as a teenager while volunteering at a UCP affiliate in New York. He has dedicated his career to empowering people with disabilities ever since.

John is committed to the mission and values of UCP, and is very excited to have returned to the Northwest community. In his free time, he enjoys exploring Oregon’s outdoor spaces with his wife and two sons, and rock climbing whenever he gets the chance.


Congratulations To Melissa and Our Supported Employment Department

We are pleased to congratulate Melissa Miller, the head of Employment Solutions (UCP's supported employment department), on reaching ten years of employment at UCP.

Melissa has been employed by UCP since April 30, 2003. She started as a Roommate (live-in caregiver) for one of the people we support. Since then, she has made a huge impact on many of the people we support and the disability community at large.

In 2005, Melissa assisted with the creation of our supported employment services. The program is known today as Employment Solutions and is revered as a model of best practices in Oregon. 

If you’ve had the privilege of working with Melissa, please make sure to congratulate her on ten years and her many successes!

UCP Employee Selected for the National Emerging Leaders Academy

The UCP national organization has selected 10 nonprofit leaders from across its affiliate network to participate in the 2013-14 class of the UCP Emerging Leaders Academy... and one of them is our own Family Support Director, Susan Cushman. 

The program seeks to expand and develop the skills of promising nonprofit managers in the UCP affiliate network. Selected participants spend a year in leadership training and mentorship with established leaders throughout the UCP network.

Susan will participate in in-depth professional development workshops. She'll also attend regular conference sessions, collaborate with UCP executives from across the country and complete a service project that will not only benefit our affiliate, but the UCP network as a whole.

Dine Out For UCP

Want to eat great food and raise money for UCP at the same time? Well, then you need to attend our next UCP Dine Out fundraiser!

The event will be held at at Good Neighbor Pizzeria 800 NE Dekum Street on September the 11th from 3pm to midnight. 10% of all proceeds will go to UCP, and we'll be using the money to fund parties, potlucks and prizes.

UCP Announces Employee of the Year


It is our pleasure and honor to announce this year’s UCP Employee of the Year. 

The award was presented today to Mackenzie Fowler, Administrative Specialist.  

Many people will know Mackenzie for her work at the Front Desk, but you may not know that she has been instrumental in rolling out UCP’s new computers this year, and that she also handled many details of UCP’s move.  For all these things and more, she was the overwhelming nominee for Employee of the Year.

UCP Announces New Community Services Director

After a very thorough recruitment process, we are pleased to announce that we have selected Michelle Douglas as UCP’s next Community Services Director. This vacancy was created last month, when the current Community Services Director, Ann Coffey, was selected to be UCP’s future Executive Director.

As is typical at UCP when hiring upper-level management, both employees and the people we support played a significant role in the hiring process. Everyone was invited to share what they thought was important for the position before recruiting began, and a cross-department group of employees and people we support participated in panel interviews and then shared their thoughts about the applicants.

Michelle Douglas was one of several phenomenal internal applicants. Michelle has been UCP’s Community Services Supports Manager for almost a year. As CSSM, Michelle has been a member of the Community Services management team. She has been responsible for supervising UCP’s pool of on-call caregivers, as well as coordinating the department’s record keeping processes, medication administration support, and 24 hour emergency response service.

For those of you who may not know Michelle, she has a bachelor’s degree in Human Communication and is fluent in Spanish. Her professional experience includes teaching, administration, direct support, and management.

As Community Services Director, Michelle will provide leadership for the development of agency policy and supervise all Community Services managers. She will create the department budget and monitor monthly financial performance, and will lead the department to ensure compliance with federal, state, and county regulations. She will facilitate a collaborative working relationship between UCP constituents, including UCP employees, people we support, families, other service providers, vendors, employers, etc. Michelle will also develop new customer service contracts, ensuring a customer-driven approach, excellent customer service, and quality deliverables.

Please join us in congratulating Michelle on her promotion. We are very excited for the next chapter here at UCP.
