We are happy to announce that Dan, who has been supported by UCP's Supported Employment Department, has been hired at Sugar Wheel Works as a shop attendant!
Employment Specialist Xochil Springer tells us that Dan recently completed a four week internship; the owner was so impressed by Dan's skills that an internship ended up being a permanent job.
Dan’s position is vital to the shop, and he truly enjoys what he does. The team at Sugar builds awesome bicycle wheels by hand. Want to learn more? Visit Sugar Wheelworks' website.

Jeff Corwin has been a part of UCP's Supported Living program for years. Recently, he became a Master Recycler.
As a part of his Master Recycler volunteer hours, Jeff decided to tackle recycling at this year's Walk, Roll 'n' Run. Whole Foods Market Green Team will be joining Jeff by providing the recycling/composting containers, and volunteers to help participants recycle and compost correctly. Jeff will also be assisting participants, too, so if you see him, make sure to say hi!
Thanks to Stalk Market's donation of "greenware" (compostable plates and silverware), our event will be very low waste, indeed.
Did you know that UCP has national Celebrity Ambassadors? These are people who have committed to help UCP raise awareness about issues related to people with a spectrum of disabilities.
Over the next few months, we plan to post information about each Celebrity Ambassador.
Today, we'll talk about Celebrity Ambassador RJ Mitte. RJ Mitte stars on the Emmy-nominated AMC drama, "Breaking Bad". You'll know him as "Walter White Jr", a character who has cerebral palsy.
In real life, RJ really does have cerebral palsy, although it is a milder form than that of his character on the show.
Mitte began his duties at UCP's 2011 national conference, co-hosting the Opening Reception, presenting the Outstanding Youth Award, and participating on a panel about mobilizing the next generation of philanthropists and advocates.
RJ is also involved with several organizations that raise awareness of equality and diversity. Another cause that he is deeply involved in is the prevention of bullying. He has been a featured guest speaker at a conference for school transportation professionals, and also has begun assisting with a national campaign designed to engage and educate people about bullying.
RJ speaks as a guest speaker at high schools, colleges, and universities around the country. He shares how he has overcome obstacles and how he has achieved his goals.

Find out by reading "The Case For Inclusion", an annual ranking released by UCP's national leadership. The report covers all 50 states and the District of Columbia (DC), analyzing Medicaid services provided to intellectual and developmental disability (ID/DD) populations.
This year's report found that progress has been made, but nearly 33,000 Americans with intellectual or developmental disabilities still live in large, state-run institutions.

Over eight million children and adults with disabilities rely on Medicaid, so cuts proposed during the debt ceiling negotiations could have a profoundly negative impact on Americans with disabilities and their families.
UCP's national leadership has joined with the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) to create Campaign to Protect Medicaid, a multi-media effort to raise awareness.

On July 12th, UCP went to the White House and Capitol Hill! A group of people with disabilities, their family members, and representatives from UCP and the American Association of People with Disabilities met with officials, with the goal of putting a face on the issue of Medicaid reductions.

The Walk is UCP's biggest special event of the year. It's a day full of fun, friends and fundraising for UCP's Family Support Department.
Team Watts is off to an astounding start fundraising for the Walk, Roll 'n' Run. So far, they have already raised $870.00 towards their goal of $1,500. Team member Marcy Watts has personally raised $720.00!
Marcy and her husband, Jimmy, came to UCP when their son, Parker, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy in 2010. As Marcy says, "Parker is a little boy with Cerebral Palsy, but most of all, he is a little boy whose smile lights up the room. He loves music, his brother, bubbles and playing rough with his daddy. His laugh is contagious and his hard work inspires me every day."
Marcy is excited to be fundraising for UCP. As she says, "It is an amazing organization that provides, information, support and respite to families dealing with this condition. We would have been lost without them."
Congratulations, Marcy, Jimmy and Team Watts! We are seriously impressed with your total so far!

Earlier this year, Executive Director, Bud Thoune. was the recipient of the Walter Furrher Award. The Walter Furrher Award is given to an individual whose extraordinary commitment has positively changed or altered the service delivery system. As the MC for the event explained, “This award is made in the name of a feisty and boisterous Multnomah ARC Director who worked tirelessly for the first services available to individuals with development disabilities.”
A group of Bud’s colleagues, co-workers, and Board members came together to celebrate Bud’s accomplishments. Following are the condensed remarks from the event.
Bud’s tenure represents an on-going commitment to quality service. Over the last 35 years, Bud has guided his agency, board and staff through the changing model of services to true person centeredness. In those first years, UCP had the Double O Workshop, but most folks who couldn’t work spent their days “at the house.”
Another decade, the 80’s, saw pride in the development of group homes and a new sheltered workshop.
Yet Bud did not stop there. When other agencies talked about the conversion to real community integration, UCP did it.
The last 10 years, [UCP has been] setting models for family support and brokerage service. In all of this, UCP holds itself to a high standard of professionalism and accountability.
Bud’s long-lasting impact is as a man of hope, a man who shows respect for and uplifts others. He is a man who deserves this award and all the good things that have come to him.

“[Bud] told me several stories I’d never heard: a couple of years after he became Executive Director, back in 1981, UCP was the first organization to consider the idea of starting group homes. Eight years later, UCP realized people could live on their own with adequate supports, and [UCP’s] group homes closed. UCP’s Supported Living program continues to be a model of how people can live in their own homes when the have the right kinds of supports. What’s really amazing and wonderful about Bud is that he never stops challenging the status quo—to continue to question what’s being done, and to figure out how it can be done better.”

As many of you may know, after nearly 40 years at UCP, Executive Director Bud Thoune is retiring at the end of 2011. Over the years, Bud has guided UCP through the ever changing models of services to where we are today: true person-centered services. Bud has been a tireless advocate in the field of disabilities rights. As Patricia Botsford says, "He sets the standards; others have tried to follow."
